Music Piracy- Is It That Bad
There are so many artists out there nowadays that are complaining that they are not getting the profits that they deserve because people are illegally downloading music. If you really look into the figures of last year you will see that this isnt true at all and it was one of the best years in music. So what excuse have these artists got now?
The Figures
Music purchases last year reached 1.5 billion which is actually the 5th year in a row to make a billion. Furthermore this also marks five years where piracy has been quite popular so how on earth have artists got the right to complain?
Jackson topped the sales overall last year and this isnt really surprising as his death brought back old and new fans to his music. Lady Gaga was one of the next biggest selling artists and she sold the most digital copies. She made over 15 million sales digitally. The Beatles came in as the biggest selling group and that has to be down to the fact the game was released last year.
Digital sales seem to be on the rise with a grand total of 40% of all of the music sales coming from this way.
Is There Really An Excuse For Illegal Downloading?
With new software available to download such as Spotify, it has to be said there is very little excuse on downloading free music. Spotify can even be put onto the iPhone now for as little as £10 a month which means unlimited music listening. Doing this will cost you less money than the bill coming your way when caught.
This year is going to set a trend for people taking up instruments like guitars and drum kits. On top of this DJ equipment sales are set to rise. Could this be anything to do with DJ Hero?
