Visiting The Hebrides Isles
The Outer Hebrides/Western Isles are a group of islands situated off the West coast of Scotland. The isles of the Inner & Outer Hebrides have been lived on since the Mesolithic times and through their history the way of life and culture has been greatly influenced by various peoples and today the Hebridean culture is a blend of Scottish, English, Norse and Celtic influences. The majority of folk speak in the Gaelic language and although many talk in English, it is commonly their second language. Not that long ago tours of the Hebrides were only for folk with plenty of cash and those folk who had plenty of time. In modern times it is incredibly to travel to the Outer Hebrides, you can travel by car and boat or take a flight to various destinations on the islands. Regrettably you can not get all of the way by rail though you can travel to the coast and then travel by coach for the remainder of the journey. Sometimes the only hiccup that can occur is sorting a place to stay especially if you are in need of Harris accommodation for groups which is commonly fully booked up.
One of the most common factors in attracting visitors to the Western Isles/Outer Hebrides is that the islands landscape and culture are dramatically unique. Dotted along the west coast of the Isle of Harris you will discover some of the most stunning golden sandy beaches in all of Scotland, and many people say the U.K. Here and there you will find a standing stone on the Isle of Harris but it is on Lewis that you will see the best circle of standing stones at Callanish not far away from Stornoway the only town in the Outer Hebrides/Western Isles. The standing stones at Callanish is said to be 2nd to only England's Stonehenge.
Deciding whether to stay on the Isles of Harris or Lewis is often a difficult decision and more and more folk are settling to spend a few days on each. Bed and breakfast on Lewis is frequently available than Isle of Harris accommodation, to avoid problems book early.
B&B accommodation in Stornoway is is not too much of a problem to find but to be certain ensure you book in advance. Nearly all accommodation in the Western Isles is of good quality and the hospitality is unbeatable and the local folk friendly and helpful.
Besides the Isles of Harris and Lewis there are a few other islands that are relatively easy to visit. The most commonly visited are North and South Uist, Barra and Benbecula and a ferry can be caught which runs from the Isle of Harris to North Uist at Leverburgh on South Harris.
