The Different Types Of Media And How It Is Employed In Mixed Media Art
Mixed media art can mean different things to different people. In essence, mixed media art is when a piece of art is made using several medium. Medium generally is the term for any material that an artist uses to create their piece of work. There are different kinds of media, and how it's used in mixed media art. In painting, media means both the foundation to which the paint is applied, the kind of paint used, as well as technique used to apply the paint. Mixed media has been in use for centuries but on a more confined basis. Artist Edgar Degas utilized ink with charcoal and pastels while Leonardo da Vinci would also mix media. Modern day mixed media is part of the Cubist development of collages early in the twentieth century by artists Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso. By putting together various things the Cubists made 3D pieces starting in 1912. Using paint, glue, wood and table cloth fringe, Picasso made his work the "Still Life" in 1914. The mixed media practice carried on with the Surrealist movement. Surrealism was the movement that represented the subconscious mind by way of creating fantastic images. It was done by putting ideas together that appear to contradict one another. The use of mixed media became more prevalent during the 1950's, 1960's and is still in use.
A mixed media display can occupy a room of a gallery or museum or be a standalone piece viewable by walking around. This is called an installation which developed from surroundings. Environment and installation incorporate many types of materials and also light. Mixed media artists use mixed media in several styles such as pointillism, abstraction or even realism.
