Arrowwood Viburnum Shrub Knowledge

Shrubs are necessary to a effective garden. They offer fragrant flowers within the spring, lush green foliage during the summer time and colorful foliage all through the fall. Shrubs give a landscape design its overall structure. With a seemingly endless list of shrubs accessible to the gardener, deciding on the appropriate 1 for your garden takes a bit of planning.

Many deciduous shrubs, those shrubs which lose their leaves in winter, are simple to grow and demand rather small maintenance. Hydrangeas are vital towards the garden in summer time for color and foliage texture. They're one of the few summer blooming shrubs and no garden is complete without them.

As the name suggests, they're appealing to butterflies. Some varieties grow up to six feet tall and six feet wide so they're more appropriate towards the bigger garden.

Viburnums are related towards the honeysuckles, so it need to come as no surprise that lots of of them have fragrant flowers. But that is not all they have in their favour. Indeed, they're so variable that it would be pretty probable to have an intriguing garden of viburnums alone.
Although viburnums is often identified over very much of the temperate northern hemisphere and also South America, most of the typical plants in our gardens, using the exceptions of the Laurustinus (Viburnum tinus) and the Guelder Rose (Viburnum opulus), happen naturally in temperate Asia or are derived from the species of that area.

Some of the more common plants are hybrids in between evergreen and deciduous species and are semi-evergreen. This can basically be an benefit mainly because they retain enough foliage to not appear bare over winter whilst also creating vivid autumn tones inside the leaves that fall.
A few of the deciduous species, for instance Viburnum opulus and Viburnum dentata, have lobed, somewhat maple-leaf-like foliage. Variegated foliage is not common, but where it does occur, the patterns and colours can be striking. The variegated form of Viburnum tinus is really popular.
Although the individual flowers are small, they're massed in heads that in some types are rather significant indeed. Most often the flowers are all fertile, but some species have hydrangea-like flower heads in which little clusters of fertile flowers are surrounded by big sterile ray florets. Cultivars have been raised with flowerheads entirely composed of sterile flowers.
Because their flowers are not brightly coloured and insects are fewer in winter, they presumably use scent as a implies to attract from a higher distance those pollinators which are around.
Fruit
In all cases, except for the sterile cultivars, the flowers are followed by berry-like drupes. While commonly interestingly coloured, the drupes aren't generally show, though once they are, they can be a actual feature. The steel-blue fruits of Viburnum davidii are very distinctive and the black drupes of Viburnum grandiflorum are particularly large, but my favourite will be the so-called High-bush Cranberry (Viburnum trilobum), which covers itself with bright red fruit in late summer and autumn. It seems that just about any plant with showy red berries gets named a cranberry, but though the fruit is edible and might be applied as a substitute for cranberry, it is not the genuine thing. For the record, the actual cranberry, the 1 of jelly fame, is Vaccinium macrocarpon, a plant extra closely associated to rhododendrons than viburnums.
Cultivation
There isn't very much to say here; viburnums are easy. Except for all but several in the incredibly coldest of New Zealand gardens, hardiness isn't a problem; they're not fussy about soil type; most will grow perfectly well in sun or component shade and some will develop in incredibly dark corners. Good drainage helps but they are going to tolerate soil that is damp for a while.
Success with viburnums is just not so a lot a matter of acquiring them to develop but directing and managing the growth they make.
As soon as attainable right after flowering, thin out any congested or weak stems and shorten back the most important branches. If this is performed for the initial five years or so, you really should have well-shaped, heavy flowering plants.
What's available
There are quite a few viburnums out there but garden centres have a tendency to be rather uninspired in their selection, sticking quite significantly towards the tried and true.
Viburnum bitchiuense
Found in southern Japan and Korea, this 3m tall deciduous shrub is attractive in its own suitable whilst also being a parent of various attractive hybrids. They open in spring and are followed by black drupes.
Viburnum × bodnantense (Viburnum farreri × Viburnum grandiflorum)
A hybrid in between two Chinese deciduous species, this 2.5m tall bush has rounded bright green leaves and little clusters of white flowers having a faint pink tint. The flowers are extremely fragrant and appear from late winter to early spring, extremely fragrant.
Viburnum × burkwoodii (Viburnum carlesii × Viburnum utile)
Viburnum carlesii is deciduous and Viburnum utile is evergreen, so inside the spirit of compromise, their 3m tall offspring is semi-evergreen. Its rounded, bright green leaves have greyish undersides and in autumn those that fall develop intense yellow, orange and red tones just before dropping. In mild locations the flowers open from late winter, elsewhere they seem in spring. They are white, opening from pink buds and are carried in ball-shaped clusters in spring. Their fragrance can scent the entirety of a smaller garden.
Viburnum × carlcephalum (Viburnum carlesii × Viburnum macrocephalum forma keteleeri)
Sometimes known as the Korean Spice Viburnum, this deciduous hybrid grows to around 2.5m tall and its flowers really do have a spicy fragrance. They open in spring, the first blooms being pink even though the later flowers tend towards white-flushed-pink. The flower heads are up to 15cm across and complement the large, rather glossy leaves.
Viburnum carlesii
At first sight this native of Korea and Japan resembles the a lot more typical Viburnum × burkwoodii, which isn't surprising as it 1 of that hybrid's parents. However, it is totally deciduous and a much more compact plant, hardly ever exceeding 1.8m tall. Its flowers, in ball-shaped clusters, pink in bud opening to white in spring, are really fragrant. You'll find rather a number of cultivars of which 'Aurora' (flowers in various shades of red pink and white) and 'Cayuga' (orange autumn foliage) are probably the most popular. Others, such as the widely grown 'Chesapeake' are hybrids with Viburnum utile.
Viburnum davidii
While capable of growing to 1.5m tall, this western Chinese evergreen species is much more commonly noticed as a mounding groundcover. Small clusters of white flowers open from late winter to mid-spring and are followed by steel blue drupes.
However, this eastern North American species comes into its own in autumn as the black drupes ripen plus the foliage develops vivid red tones.
Viburnum erubescens
This early summer-flowering, deciduous or semi-evergreen shrub is native towards the Himalayas and found in mountainous areas as far south as Sri Lanka. The flowers are white flushed with pale pink and are followed by red fruits that blacken when ripe.
Viburnum farreri
Although much less typical than the hybrids raised from it, this 3m tall, northern Chinese, deciduous species is properly worth growing for its extremely fragrant pink-tinted white flowers that open from mid-winter. If pollinated the flowers develop into red fruit that blackens when ripe.
Viburnum japonica
Like V. davidii, this evergreen shrub is most typically noticed applied as a large-scale groundcover, though it is capable of growing nicely over 1m tall. Loose clusters of white flowers in late spring are followed by red drupes. Standard trimming after flowering will maintain it compact.
Viburnum lantana
The Wayfaring Tree, a species widespread in Eurasia, is really a deciduous, sometimes tree-like shrub with heads of rather dull creamy-white flowers in spring. It is grown extra for its fruit, which is red ageing to black, and its foliage.
Viburnum opulus
Found from Europe and North Africa to Central Asia, the Guelder Rose can be a large deciduous shrub with mid green, deeply lobed, maple-like leaves that redden in autumn. Rounded heads of white flowers in spring are followed in late summer by red fruit. The bark contains a glucoside, viburnine, that has utilizes in herbal medicine, particularly within the control of spasms and cramps. 'Roseum' (syn. 'Sterile') is a cultivar with significant heads of all-sterile flowers. It is known as the snowball tree because of the size and colour of its flowerheads and is far more widely grown than the species.
Viburnum plicatum
From China and Japan, this deciduous shrub grows to around 3m tall and has rounded, mid green, hazel-like leaves with serrated edges. Flattened clusters of white flowers in open in spring and might be followed by red fruit that blackens when ripe. The tiered branches are tiered make this species rather distinctive and are a characteristic that's particularly apparent within the cultivar 'Mariesii'. 'Rosacea' is usually a cultivar with bronze young foliage and pink-tinted, all-sterile flowers in huge heads.
The leaves are as much as 20cm extended and quite heavily textured. 'Variegatum' is really a cultivar with gold-splashed foliage. If the flowers interest you, appear for 'Roseum', which has pinkish red blooms.
Viburnum tinus
Once one of probably the most favorite hedging plants, though not so frequent now, the Laurustinus is seriously a 3m tall, evergreen shrub from southern Europe and North Africa. Variegated foliage cultivars generally have brighter pink flowers.
Flat heads of white flowers open in spring and substantial clusters of quite bright red berries in late summer to autumn.
******
A small searching, specially by way of mail order catalogues, will yield really some a lot more species, hybrids and cultivars. Or you might try propagating your own. The species may perhaps be raised from seed, which is typically ideal stratified, but hybrids and cultivars will need to be propagated vegetatively, most generally by semi-ripe cuttings.

Viburnums have long been a gardener's preferred as they're 1 the most versatile, adaptable and uncomplicated care shrubs available. You will find over 120 varieties of Viburnum so there's one for each garden. Some viburnums, for instance the Korean spice or judii varieties are appropriate for shrub borders and as specimen plants. Others have a far more natural feel, including the arrowwood or maple-leaf viburunum, which are great for the woodland garden. Most varieties retain colorful berries within the winter.

Many evergreens are easy to grow too and provide gardens with year-round interest. As soon as a rhododendron is planted, it demands little maintenance. Though not necessary, pinching off spend blooms encourage a healthy bloom the following year.
